Brianna Alvarez - Senior Class Publicity Officer 2022-2023
I am a senior this year. my last year. I am so nervous to leave. i have made so many connections with so many people in my community for more than a decade. one of my biggest fears is everybody losing interest in me. One of my biggest obsessions of my life has been Smosh. Smosh is a comedy duo, now group, that has been making videos literally all of my life. Since I was a kid I knew Ian and Anthony would always be there to make me happy, and they would never disappoint me. July 2017, Anthony left. He left all of us, he left Ian, he left me. The was one of if not the worst thing that had happened to me. I have truly never been the same since. Every year I go through phases where I only watch Smosh. When I was watching old videos I stumbled across a video that Ian and Anthony made in 2011 that had the line “is anyone still here?” I see this as a representation of senior year. There are many people that have come and gone in my life and I’m nervous that all of them will leave like Anthony did. I don’t want to be like Ian and ask, “Is anyone still here?” I really want to be able to build connections with my class, and especially my seniors. I felt way more welcomed and loved coming to Core Camp this year, and I am glad to stay that the love has stayed with me, whilst entering the school year. I don’t want to see my self in 10 years and ask “is anyone still here?”

Part I: Favorite Quotes
"Is anyone still here?" - Ian Hecox
This is the theme of my 2022-2023 portfolio. Even though it is from a silly Smosh video about MySpace, it makes me wonder about the upcoming stage in my life. Everyone around me is asking about my future or telling me about theirs and it asks is anyone still here? It's the last year of high school and I feel like I need to cherish it before worrying about my future.
"Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." - John Lennon
Nothing goes my way. It's a well known fact at this point. I am also obsessed with the Beatles. It's a well known fact at this point. I know that if plan my life out something will go wrong. Something always has to go wrong. I can't control everything in my life. I can't anticipate or plan for everything that happens. Life is unpredictable and I can’t control or re-direct everything, and sometimes all I can do is accept it as it is. Which is so painful sometimes but that's just the way it is.
"I love you! You may as well take my heart Catherine it's already full of you!" - Dangerously Yours (Masquerade)
I love love. I think love is one of the greatest things in the world. One of the things I'm known for is being a little bit boy crazy, but whats not to love about boys. Anyone for that matter! There is an old radio show that I fell in love with called Dangerously Yours. Each episode is about a different couples impossible situation. Masquerade is about a man and woman, Rudolph and Catherine, on opposite sides of the war who trick each other by seducing each other. In the process of this they end up falling in love. So Catherine has to make the decision of whether to betray her country or the love of her life. I think that love is a very powerful thing and the strength that it has is unmatched.
"I always tell the girls, never take it seriously, if ya never take it seriosuly, ya never get hurt, ya never get hurt, ya always have fun, and if you ever get lonely, just go to the record store and visit your friends." - Penny Lane, Almost Famous
I try to not take things seriously, maybe that is one of my faults but it gives me the freedom that I enjoy. As I've started to take things less seriously I've been getting hurt way less. #YOLO

Part II: Quote
"We're Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)" - Song by Trooper
I was at a wedding a few weeks ago and we were having fun and dancing and there was a guy who got on the mic and said, "We're here for a good time, not a long time so let's party like crazy!" That really stuck with me. I looked it up after the fact and I found out it was a song by Trooper. I feel like it can relate to my life in so many ways. I mean like, I love having fun and mucking around. At this point it's what I'm known for. As the year is ending I'm realizing that I am not here for a long time. So I gotta have a fun time, before my time is up.

Role Model
Dolores Huerta for lack of a better term is a slay. She is the Co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association, which is an organization that I care deeply about. I have supported UFW since I could remember. Dolores is an advocate for the working class, women, and children. She is, I think, one of the most influential people I have ever met. She has grown a following and gotten fame for her activism, but that only pushed her to continue the fight for farm workers. I met her this August and it was FOR REAL life changing. I had known of her forever, but meeting her and getting to know her was surreal. She has helped out so many people, including even my family and friends. She gives a voice to those who don't have one and because of that, she is an inspiration to me. She has taught me that I can be a voice for others. |

I am choosing a Quokka because I took a "What animal are you?" quiz and this is what I got...
Wherever I go, I light up a room, and people can’t help but want a selfie with me. I’m curious by nature and quick to make friends. Me and my mates like to go out at night, and I love hunting out new places to eat, so long as they’re vegan! So I'm not vegan, but this seems like a pretty good description of me. These are all things that people have told me. I would like to hope I light up a room when I walk into it. I know that my feelings tend to project onto others. My friends and I have a joke where we say, "you're Projecting," when we start venting. I am a big picture girl. I love taking 0.5's with my friends. I am a curious person. I am a big wanderer. I love wandering to new people. I love people. Making new friends is my favorite thing. I am a party girl at heart. I love meeting people and have the best nights ever. |

Party in Ipanema, baby!
I want to party I want to samba I want to party I want to samba I want to party And live my life (live my life) I want to party (party) And fly Imma fly, fly just like a bird (But you are a bird! ) Oh yeah, you're right, So let me fly just like a rocket, then (okay) Fly so high where I need to come down for oxygen Cause once we start it, baby, ain't no ain't no stoppin' then 'Cause I just want to live my life, and party All I want is to be free, and rock my body Ain't nowhere around the world that I want to live my life In Rio 'Cause in Rio In Rio, I realize I want to party (party) I want to samba (party) I want to party (party) And fly I'm that samba, samba Master, master, master Master, master Who shouts out? Imma get your blaster, blaster, Blaster, blaster, blaster You dance fast, But I dance faster, faster, faster Faster, faster |
You're too slow
You need to catch up You can dance, and dance, but I I want to party (party) I want to samba (party) I want to party (party) I want to samba (party) I want to party (party) And live my life (live my life) I want to party (party) And fly Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey Laya Laya Laya Laya Hey Laya Laya Laya Laya Laya Laya Laya Laya Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey |
I am a party girl at heart. I have been known to buss it down on the dance floor. I have a lot of wiggles that need to get danced out. I just wanna party, samba and fly. I need to fly, fly just like a bird. The point of this song is trying to teach Blu, the main character, how to explore his freedom as a bird. He has had his wings his whole life, but he hasn't used them yet. I think this can represent me moving onto the next chapter of my life. I have all of my tools, I just need to utilize them. Then I can party, samba, and fly. Also, this song comes from one of the best movie soundtracks ever created, Rio. I have always been a fan of bossa nova music and this movie killed it.

What I Like Best About Being a Member of Leadership
The first memory i could think of was core camp. Core as a whole was a movie. I connected with everyone in a way i hadn't before. I met all of the freshmen and newbies and fell in awe of them. I grew with my senior class hotties; Apes, Gracie-James, Smemily, Spence, and Gids. I was really scared Spence and Gids hated me but then I realized that Gideon and Spencer were like me and April. I had been in classes with people who I had never really known and from then on we were them. There were many shenanigans that will be told when we bawl with burritos but that weekend I already knew that this year would be far superior than the last.
The second of course has to be when we were at Aprils house planning the dance for homecoming. It was the first big jump into homecoming. I was expecting to be home in an hour. That hour was 13 hours too long. Emily went to work, then came back. We went to Chik-Fa-Le and came back. Cried, Laughed, and Spilled the most atomic tea. It was that day I realized that these were my girls in the long haul.
The third memory I have is homecoming the actual day. We had walked through the parade, My science campers were jumping on our float and the world had turned to chaos. I end up in Morty's office drinking luke warm water and TEARS. Elias stops to talk to me and he shares to me at that moment all of the stress and craziness was all worth it. We later went to the attendance office, layed on the floor, (sorry Kelly), and reminisced on the day we had, until walking over to the field to sell a groundbreaking 1 shirt.

A Reflection of a Peer in Leadership
My reflection is going to be on Miss Gracie-James. She is my gal for real. Scratch that, she is ME for real. I love her so supa dupa much. She was one of the first big connections I made going into this year. From us spiderman kissing, to us laughing about being Briamna Almers, Gracie is someone who I've found deep trust in and who I admire more than most. I know I can always call her in a time of need even if its about a boy she doesn't care about hearing again. She had a dark edge that makes me love her gothyness. We complement each other in our personalities. As she put it best we are the sunshine and the midnight rain. She also drives me, hehe. One instance in particular I remember is when we were at Aprils house, playing The Sims, and we had to leave cause April was going to visit family. Instead of going home, she took me to her home. I LOVED her house. There were like 6 kids there and I ate mac and cheese hot dogs. Gracie opened up her home to me and I felt so welcomed and invited, like I was one of the million siblings. It was one of my favorite things I had ever done with her. |

What I love to do...
As of right now I've been totally into people. I have been growing closer to The Lounge again. We've re-branded to Out The Mud. As the years have gone on we have become better and better friends. The Lounge has been my longest consistent friend group I've ever had. Even though we can be so angry or annoyed at each other there is always something to bring us back together. If it's a late night call or going to a boys volleyball game supporting one of our friends is the thing that we all can count on. Not all of us have attended the same school. Currently we are spread all around the 209, so we had the privilege of getting to know each other in person as well as online. We are a group that doesn't need to spend every day together to prove we are in it for the long haul. Having instances like COVID and being at different schools to bring us down only made us stronger. It makes me excited for the future because our friendships have proved to withstand downs and separation.

Letter to Parents
Dear Mom and Dad,
You know, sometimes being your daughter can be kind of shitty when I'm stuck in the middle. As I'm getting older, I'm realizing that raising a kid isn't easy, let alone 3. I know I can be a total pain in the ass, especially when I have to clean my room or do the dishes but you accept me for me and teach me about all you can. I am grateful for the experiences that I was exposed to and the lessons I had to learn, even if they totally blew at the moment. I am grateful for the movies, shows, and songs that you showed me. Because of them I am in love with production and I have a greater understanding of a time that wasn't mine and a life that isn't mine. I am grateful for the environment that you raised me in. It gave me the confidence to be whoever I was and learn how to grow into myself without insecurities. Even if that meant I wore an I ♡ CALI hat all through 6th Grade. I know that I can talk to you about the party that I went to and the boys I like. We have built a level of trust and understanding that is far beyond what I could ask for. At times I feel like I can do nothing so then I do nothing. But then you remind me of what nothing is and how you spent your life so that mine could be better than yours. There are so many things that would be different without you in my life. I wouldn't be in school, I wouldn't care about literally anything, and I would listen to shitty music. I am glad to be reaching the age where we can be friends as well as parents and daughter. Recommending each other songs and movies we like, getting ready to go out, late night drives, scrambling for change at the drive through. With our fun times we also have to have bad times. I'm still navigating the world and with you by my side it makes it feel less scary. When I mess up I know that I can come to you without judgement or at least minimal judgement. I know I will always be a little girl in your eyes but I need to start breaking out. Our lives are changing everyday, mine as much as yours and we need to acknowledge that. I appreciate what you have given me but now I need to take it and move forward.

Your True Legacy
General Advice
I can't help with being Publicity for the Class of '24 or being a Senior Class Hottie, but I can help with being Senior Class Publicity Officer. Because it's Senior year, everyone gets totally into spirit and they want to be involved in everything.

The Professional
The two best aspects of what we are professionally have done this year are the speeches and the mock interviews. With the speeches it definitely gave me a chance to open up and work on my public speaking skills. Public speaking is something that I struggle with and being able to work with it in a supportive and learning environment made it a more comfortable experience. The mock interviews have been incredibly helpful. Writing The résumé and cover letter and connecting with a professional within our chosen career is definitely hopeful for the future. Resumes and cover letters are even helpful now as I am looking for a job for the summer. I really appreciate the experiences that I have been able to experience during leadership this year. They’re helping me develop into the adult that I am becoming, building my leadership skills.
Page 23
The Ideal Leader
My ideal leader is somebody who can stay relatable with their students. A quality that I admire is genuine. I like somebody who can talk to their students as if there people rather than students. For the classroom aspect of the ideal leader is somebody who doesn’t give a lot of busywork. Assignments that don’t matter I don’t think should matter as a grade. I am not the best at school, I never have been, and I probably never will be. But I can say that my homework is constantly adding more stress. I feel like a classroom should be more about assessing students based on the knowledge that they have learned. Instead of creating them on busywork that they probably copied their friends over on.

Summer/August Formal ASB Meeting
Position Assessment: During the summer, the Senior Class officers met at April's house to go over the senior class merch. Though izadesign was incredibly painful, we found our designs for our shirt/crew neck and our hoodie. We finalized our merch a week before core camp, made our leadership jeans and we were off.
I got access to the @rhsco23 account and started posting on there. I made 2 posts during the summer, One about taking Senior Portraits, and the other was about Diploma Forms. I made over the account, making it professional, adding new highlights, changing the bio, and updating the LinkTree.
While at core, we started on Registration and Homecoming. We showed Morty all of our designs and they were successful. We had picked our two themes for homecoming. HayDay or "9 to 5," Dolly Parton. I personally wanted "Save a horse, Ride a cowboy" but it was sadly denied. No matter what we knew we wanted a country theme.
When we got home we had a meeting with Morty about the co'22 senior gift. This year's senior class officers are in charge of containment of last year's senior gift. Since then we have looked at different types of containers to use for the signs.
At registration, I made 7 more posts. 3 about senior merch. 2 about Senior Sunrise; buying old sophomore shirts to tie-dye for sunrise. The last 2 were informational for Pow-Wow. I worked the shirt table writing receipts and selling old shirts. We sold more than half of our old shirts. We have like 10 left to sell, we kind of slayed. The Minion Squad tie-dyed all of the senior shirts. I collaborated with the booster club in order to promote senior parking spots. I learned how to use Reels. They kind of blow. I did Link Crew and Leadership training days where I assisted with decorations.
For Senior Sunrise, the senior class officers did a Savemart run to buy juices and doughnuts for sunrise. We crazily underestimated and more than half of our class showed up. That was a super slay.
When school started, we started on Club Rush. For the rally, I posted a story, asking for participants for the rally. We has Chloe Price and AJ Sidhu to represent blue and we had Faith Fauicer and Manny Cortez to represent FFA. I also posted telling all of the seniors to wear black for the Senior Stampede. I went to the thrift store and bought sunglasses for a reel that I was making about Club Rush. It’s still in the works. In terms of Merch sales there was a little slip with the money, but we realized we didn't account for the Senior Sunrise merch. The dance was a success. I helped decorate and clean up. We did so good. I did Link Crew for Back to School night.
In terms of Spirit, I have been working with Elias Ramirez to train him with Spirit Count. He has been doing a really good job. He reminds me of me. I filled out a P.O. of washi tape and chalk markers for the spirit board. Emily and I have been working on it and it should be ready to present by Friday. I have been making the posts for the @asbofriponhighshool account and filling in when need be.
Now we have been focusing on Homecoming. We bought new items for our spirit box and we have a trailer for homecoming. We have been talking about dress up days with the seniors.
Standing Committee: I am currently, loosely apart of the Spirit Committee. I am in charge of positing the percentages and maintaining the spirit board. I am also apart of the Senior Signs in the front of the school. This month we put up the Welcome Back signs and the Club Rush signs.
Special Committee: I was part of the decoration committee for the Black Light Rally, and all that basically was setting up the lights and putting black paper on the windows looking into the foyer.
Mentorship Evaluation: I love Gabby. She has been so kind to me since school started. We never really got to know each other, but we have been able to get along since we started to sit next to each other. I have seen her out and about all of the time because we live in the same neighborhood. She has been my girl this year, I am excited to see where our relation ship will go this year.
Concerns: As a personal concern, I feel like I have not had my posts ready for Morty on Fridays. I have been lagging on those, so I think I would do better if I had them planned ahead of time.
Positive Comment: I would like to dedicate my Positive Comment to Elias Ramirez. He has been my Spirit Count trainee. He has been doing a very good job with Spirit so far. He is very personable person who really loves spirit. As it being his first year in leadership, he has found a comfortable place in his class and position. I love his energy and I think he will be an excellent candy boy.
Change: Communication between the class and between contributing members could be improved. After the dance was a bit of a mess, I feel like we could have done a better job with clean up if we had a list to go off of to make clean up, and other activities go more smoothly.
My Impact: I encouraged a group of freshman to go to the dances and go to the games. I have made an effort to continue to talk to my Link Crew kids. I want to make the next few classes excited for spirit again. There has been a very obvious decrease in participation, but if I can individually reach out, I hope I can make a change.
