Brianna Alvarez - Spirit Commissioner 2021-2022
I am a junior this year. This will be my third year at Ripon High School. I have been in Ripon almost all my life and I can confidently say that I am incredibly disconnected from the world. I have spent a year in my bed and now I am coming out of my cave expecting to know what college I should go to and what I want to do with the rest of my life. I have met thousands of people from thousands of places. I had a homeless man live in my house for months. I spent a summer in a different country analyzing the way other people live, to get a better understanding of what wealth and poverty is in different places of the world. All of my life I have been protesting for a change in a world that I am not accustomed to. I have had glimpses of the world from time to time in my life, but I have a totally normal life for a teenage girl in a small town in the USA. I have never had the best grades. Grades seem to be incredibly important but they don't matter that much to me. I love to learn and know about things but I seem to only know a little about the things that matter. But this year is going to be a fresh start. I am back at school and I am ready to get back into the groove of things. I may know nothing but I am here to learn everything. I am going to try no to fall. I have fallen before and when I did I fell hard. I almost didn't come back to school but I am here now. It is my first year in the program but I felt like I had an easier time easing into the fact that I have to go back to school. I loved Core Camp. I thought I was really encouraging and it made me feel more comfortable with my leadership family. I really want to find myself again. I want to re find my love for school. I am really nervous for school this year but leadership is something that I really love. I love the activities that we do in school and I think that it would make my school experience more exciting if I get to be apart of school and I get to make the kid that hates school, hate it a little bit less.

Part I: Favorite Quotes
"Is it better to speak or die?" - Elio Perlman
I can live my whole life in fear of what I should have done or take risks and life life without regret. I still live life with fear of situations but at those moments I ask myself Is it better to speak or die. It's never better to die.
"We accept the love we think we deserve." - Todd Anderson
People know the way that their heart should be treated but they might not think that they deserve what they want. The best kind of love I and anyone can receive is self-love. If I want a successful life with others, I need to know how to have a successful life with myself.
"Cinema is a mirror of reality and it's a filter." - Oliver, Call Me By Your Name
I live my life on T.V. I have centered my life around the art of cinema and try to relate my day to day to being the main character, but movies are perfect and life is simply not a movie. I am trying everyday to come back to Earth but it is taking some time. Once I realize I'm not on the Truman Show I will feel better about my life.
"Our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once." - Samuel Perlman
There are people that are going to come into my life and try to destroy it but I have to know in my heart that only I can be treated how I deserve to be. I he one body, my temple, and I have to give it the love it deserves because I only have one.

Part II: Quote
"I know nothing Oliver" - Elio Perlman
I have gone through so much this year and learned so much this year, but as a leader I feel as I need to continue growing and adapting to become better that I am. It is fine to learn everything there is to know about anything in the world, but it is also important to know about the things that don't matter. Surrounding yourself in bubbles can complicate and stress you out. It is always in one's best interest analyze their life and see what is an underlying importance. This quote is about self expression and understanding. To be a good leader you need to focus on yourself as well as who you are leading to make an effective team.

Oliver : Is there anything you don't know?
Elio : I know nothing, Oliver. Oliver : Well, you seem to know more than anyone else around here. Elio : Well, if you only knew how little I really know about the things that matter. Oliver : What "things that matter?" [long pause] Elio : You know what things. |

Role Model
My biggest inspiration in life is the woman who gave me life, my mother, Erika Alvarez. It was us against the world. She always gave me the idea that I could do anything I want in the world and be whomever I wanted to be. I was introduced into a world full of love and laughter but also pain and sorrow. She was always there as a supporter during the highest point and she was there as comfort during my lowest points. She is an activist in the world of civil right, she was a front line healthcare worker during the time of the pandemic's peak, she is currently battling breast cancer, and she is mine and my brothers dazzling mother. She has so much dedication to her kids, when it comes to supporting my brothers autism, all the way to driving me to yoga at 7 in the morning. She has filled our house with movies and music, books from the floor to the ceiling. She gave me excellent role models that have been inspiring me since I could remember: Frida Kahlo, Dolly Parton, Alyssa Coscarelli, Rita Moreno, and so many more. From all of the people that have come into my life the person who has been the biggest role model of my life has been her. She is the person that I want to be the most. She is someone that inspires me everyday and I wouldn't be the person that I am today if I didn't have her in my life. I love you mom. Always.

Inner Animal
My inner animal is a sloth. Sloths are perceived as lazy animals and so am I. Sloths keep to themselves and they are very care free and laid back. They sleep all day long and they're peaceful and easygoing. I feel like I embody all of their characteristics very well. Sloth in Latin means "without care." I try to live my life without care, very "que sera sera. " I have a very close connections to sloths. In fact, my nickname at camp was the The Farting Sloth. I think sloths are misinterpreted

I never wanted to be better than my friends
I just wanted to prove wrong the people in my head The ones who told me I'd be better of dead The ones who told me that I would never win When I delivered newspapers they said I was too slow When I was a barista they said I made lousy foam When I worked in retail they said I was a slob Much too dumb for school and much too lazy for a job So I rode my bike like lightning And I made cappuccinos that would make the angels sing Took two showers a day and I dressed up like a princess Shook my fist in my own face and said I'll show you who's the best I wrote the kinds of papers teachers hang up on their walls I was employee of the month at seven different shopping malls And one time playing football I pulled the tendons in my leg To prove that I was tough I hopped on one foot And finished up the game I thought if I succeeded I'd be happy and they'd go away But first thing in the morning I'd still wake up and I'd hear them say "You're fat, ugly, and stupid, you should really be ashamed No one will ever like you you're not good at anything" And sometimes I'd rise to the challenge But other times I'd feel so bad that I could not get out of bed And on the days I stayed in bed I sang and sang and sang About how crappy I felt no realizing how many other people would relate Now people send me emails that say thanks for saying the things they didn't know how to say And the people in my head still visit me sometimes And they bring all of their friends but I don't mind I play my guitar like lightning When I sing I like it when you sing too loud and clear Different voices different tones all sayin' "yeah, we're not alone" I got good at feeling bad and that's why I'm still here I got good at feeling bad and that's why I'm still here I got good at feeling bad and that's why I'm still here |
I am in love with this song. It is so relatable.I feel like it is a good representation of me as a whole. Like I am trying my best to stay happy and positive even though my life is completely falling apart all of the time. I am not the best at school and I don't know how to follow direction well, but I have the momentum to keep going. There are other days where I physically cannot get out of bed and want to spend all of my time lifelessly. I am constantly keeping myself busy and I don't focus on the bad so I don't have to deal with the bad. The constant assumption is that if I make others happy I will be happy. It's and assumption. The days are coming and going and I am feeling better and worse.

What I Like Best About Being a Member of Leadership
This is my first year of leadership and right away I felt like I had a new school family. I have been so grateful for the new experiences that my leadership family has brought to me. Through some events I have had time to spend with the members in Leadership.
The first memory that I am going to talk about is Core Camp. Core Camp was the first bonding event we had this year. It was also my first time meeting the people in Leadership. At Core Camp I met my mentor, Jaydin, and she became a big support system in Leadership. I had so much fun doing the activities and swimming. It was really fun and It was a good way to connect with my new leadership family.
My second memory is homecoming. The junior class trying to build our float and It literally taking all night. When I was left alone with Dillan and 6 burgers, while we were trying to figure out what we needed to do cause everyone just left. I ate 4 burgers. I loved doing the walk to the Church with my friends while also doing my skeleton makeup. We ended up needing more people with us for the parade so they got to walk with us. Then at the end of the parade I jumped onto the Freshmens float dressed as Miguel form Coco and got to ride with them when they were riding around.
My third memory was the door decorating. Most of the people in my group were juniors and it gave me time to talk and connect with them. We were blasting Taylor Swift and Christmas music and we were having a really fun time, until the end when were were hungry and tired, but we were hungry and tired together, as a family.

A Reflection of a Peer in Leadership - Dillan Saltsman
I want to reflect on Dillan Saltsman. I have known him since sixth grade and since then, I knew that I would never meet someone else like him. He is so kind and hardworking. He always manages to make my day brighter with his positivity. He is so smart and he is willing to help me with whatever I need, inside or out of Leadership. He is one of the most amazing and inspiring people that I know and he always puts himself out there and tries to make things happy and fair for everyone. He is diligent, he always does amazing work to what he puts his mind on and he never complains even when things get tough. He is such a role model not only to me but to everyone around him. You can always to look for him to give you joy. The integrity he has is admirable. He is our soft spoken king and I love him to the moon and back. Always.

What I love to do...
One thing that I am absolutely in love with is 40-year-old comedians. From Seth Rogen to literally anyone on SNL, they are all the loves of my life. I am so obsessed with stand-up comedy and the comedians that say the comedy. I have special dedicated days in the year where they are totally dedicated to Smosh or SNL. Even if it’s just watching a movie that has 3% on Rotten Tomatoes. Watching these goofy people gives me more joy than most things I do one day. I love watching movies all of the time. On average I watch about 9 movies a week. From classic movies to student films, I am obsessed with movies and I hope someday in the future I can make a contribution to making an awkward little girl like me fall in love with movies.

Letter to Parents
Dear Mom and Dad,
Thank you for being the best parents I could ask for. I know we have our arguments and our fights about little things but I really appreciate what you guys have done to me. Teaching me about the world, and preparing me to be the best person that I could be. You guys love and respect me and accept me however I present myself. You don't show you’re annoyed when I crazily talk about Cody Ko or repeat the same Vine for the 100th time that day. You guys know how to calm me down when I am freaking out and going crazy over the smallest things, and reassure me that everything is going to be fine. I know how much you love and trust me and I am glad I can live my life freely whilst also knowing you are there to support me.
Always,
Brianna (the favorite daughter)

Your True Legacy
General Advice
Dear Future Spirit Commissioners,
As Spirit Coordinator you have to take spirit counts and I trust that you all do them well and accurately. You will go class to class, a count who is spirited, and give them candy. I am Senior Publicity. So after you take your count you need to send the counts to me. I ended up sending them later than I needed to so count them up and send them on the way back to class. I would try to evenly split up the classes before you do the counts. I ended up with 17 classes and the gym the first week. I didn't get back to Leadership till Lunch and I didn't finish counting. Bring a map. You will get lost. I love spirit count. You will get harassed and overwhelmed but it is worth it. There are a few classes that you will look forward to going to. Mine are Herrin and Colonel. They are what make it worth it. Have fun as a "candy girl" or boy.
Escalon is ALWAYS black. When you are decorating for the football and basketball games next year make sure that the theme for Escalon is always black. No other school matters as much as Escalon. When you are making the posters and getting the decorations together for the games, get everything ready a week before, if not the day before. GET EXTRA TAPE. The posters fall. You'll need tape. When you are making balloon arches you don't need to fill all of the balloons with helium. The helium tank is expensive. Don't leave the tank on. You'll get an angry text from Morty and that is no bueno. Make sure you triple-check the storage room. Don't leave it a mess. That is irresponsible and the scary Morty text.
You're going to sell a smack ton of shirts. Good places to sell them are PowWow, football games, track meets, AP night, 8th-grade night, 8th-grade day, sports night, club rush, and any event where you know there will be a lot of parents. Parents are easy to bag. Old shirts sell for $5, old long sleeves sell for $10 and the new shirts sell for $10-20. It will make it easier to get rid of the old shirts so you don't have to keep them hanging around.
You need to save the Purchase Orders and Procedure forms. Scan them and put them a folder on your phone. Also, don't get rid of any of your Leadership papers. SAVE THEM!! You will need them. Also, take pictures of everything. Leadership's second definition is a core memory maker. You will want to save the moments forever.
It is a great job. Great to start with. You will love it.

The Professional
The two best aspects of what we are professionally have done this year are the speeches and the mock interviews. With the speeches it definitely gave me a chance to open up and work on my public speaking skills. Public speaking is something that I struggle with and being able to work with it in a supportive and learning environment made it a more comfortable experience. The mock interviews have been incredibly helpful. Writing The résumé and cover letter and connecting with a professional within our chosen career is definitely hopeful for the future. Resumes and cover letters are even helpful now as I am looking for a job for the summer. I really appreciate the experiences that I have been able to experience during leadership this year. They’re helping me develop into the adult that I am becoming, building my leadership skills.
Page 25
Change
It is my first year in leadership and I have had a great time this year. It was my first year back after distance-learning and I felt very included in my leader ship family. My biggest concern with our classroom was definitely the dynamics though. I definitely felt more comfortable with the other kids who are also first years in leadership than I did with people even in my own class. The connections that I’ve made over the years have definitely been connections that I know will last for a while. Being able to be free and sit with whomever I’d like during class was wonderful. I just feel like I’m not able to talk to every single person in class which I can talk to my main group. With that, I don’t think our communication as a class is very good. Situation story I’ll have to work together might not always go as greatly as planned because of the lack of communication within our class. There have Been constant instances where people have brought up our lack of communication, in class and the student body. We of course have our respective group chats and our app, Brief. I think for next year we should have more team bonding activities so we can become stronger as a group. This year I had the chance to grow with a lot of people that I hadn’t really known before, but I also miss my opportunity to Connect with a lot of people in my leadership family. These are definitely my biggest concerns in the leadership class. connection and communication.
Page 26
The Ideal Leader
My ideal leader is somebody who can stay relatable with their students. A quality that I admire is genuine. I like somebody who can talk to their students as if there people rather than students. For the classroom aspect of the ideal leader is somebody who doesn’t give a lot of busywork. Assignments that don’t matter I don’t think should matter as a grade. I am not the best at school, I never have been, and I probably never will be. But I can say that my homework is constantly adding more stress. I feel like a classroom should be more about assessing students based on the knowledge that they have learned. Instead of creating them on busywork that they probably copied their friends over on.
